core values

"The SAGE Magnet (at Louis Armstrong Middle School) is a shining example of the innovative programs available in Los Angeles Unified. Providing students with a safe environment to question gender norms, learn about social justice movements and inspire students to become agents of change are goals that reflect our values as a school district. Congratulations to all the families and staff who worked so hard to make SAGE a reality." -

1. AN INCLUSIVE AND AFFIRMING CURRICULUM
All students are fully reflected in the SAGE curriculum, so students feel included and affirmed. When students feel included in the classroom, they are then inspired by the rebels and heroes of history who dared to make a positive change in the world.

2. SERVICE LEARNING
Once inspired, students are then given the opportunity to go out and make positive changes themselves. Examples of service learning are cultivating a community garden to provide produce for a community food bank, a painted mural to change hearts and minds, or meeting with local government officials to propose a new measure.

.

3. GENDER STUDIES
At SAGE we will study the impact of gender on our middle school students, and the often limiting impact of the narrative children are being provided with. We will teach our students to become critical thinkers, empowering them to write their own story.

4. SPEECH AND DEBATE
In this social media age, we feel it's critical that young people learn how to substantiate their opinions with research and proven facts, and then have the skills to speak their truth to others.

5. SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
At SAGE we care about the "whole child" and understand the middle school students need support when navigating the emotional, physical changes that come with middle school age. To that end, we will be providing our students with breathing and mindfulness techniques and practices, built into their school day, as well as a three year program of yoga in lieu of P.E.

THE SAGE CURRICULUM

The Representation Project, including the films "The Mask You Live In" and "Miss Representation," explore the troubling narratives our children are exposed to regarding gender and its various, often unhealthy limitations. Both films, and their corresponding curricula, will be incorporated into the gender studies portion of SAGE.

Here are some scenes from "The Mask You Live In" which explores the correlation between respect and violence that society teaches young boys. We need to teach them a different, healthier path towards masculinity, one that is defined by character, intelligence and service to the greater good. Fight with the strength of your character, not with your fists.

You can write your own story, and be what you want to be. Boys can "man up" by becoming critical thinkers, and girls can be "pretty" by creating positive change.
