Chapter 8 Notes

Relative Dating

* Superposition of Rock Layers,

  The Youngest rock layer is on the top.  "Younger over Older"

The oldest rock layer is on the bottom layer.

The law of crosscutting relationships - Igneous rock intrusions must be younger than the layers it passes through.  A fault that splits layers must be younger than the layers it splits.

 

Rock layers can be faulted, folded, or tilted (slanted).

An angular unconformity has tilted rock layers over flat layers. 

An unconformity is a missing rock record, caused by erosion.

 

Absolute Dating

Radiometrically Dating rock layers and rocks.

Half Life - The amount of time for half of a radioactive element to decompose into a stable element.

Paleontology - The study of past life.

Fossils are found in sedimentary rock can be radiometrically dated.

Sediments are deposited at a slow and steady rate.

Uniformitarianism - geologic change occurs slowly.

 

Catastrophism means that geologic change happened suddenly.
