The spring season brings new life to one of the most famous fairy tales ever told as The Millikan Middle School Performing Arts Magnet & Science Academy Drama Production Department presents JACK, the newest laugh-out-loud twist on the iconic “Jack and the Beanstalk” fairy tale.
In this updated version of the timeless classic, a young girl (interestingly enough named Jack) is determined to leave childhood behind and, in turn, is slowly losing the ability to tap into her imagination until she finds herself magically trapped in the story of Jack and his magic beans. The only way out of the story is to become the title character, slay the Giant and rescue the Queen, or stay trapped in the fairy tale world forever. You thought you knew the fairy tale, but you don’t know Jack.
“This is a production the entire family is going to enjoy,” says writer Noemi Villela Dean. “There is something in the play for everyone. The humor is witty and the story is timeless. At the heart of this play is the struggle we all experience in dealing with the fact that we have to eventually grow up and leave childhood behind.”
Co-writer and director Tres Dean elaborates by saying, “Sometimes people are so eager to leave their youth, the power of their imagination is lost and, to me, that is extremely sad. I think we all know people like this. We see our kids try to grow up too fast. This is play everyone in the audience can relate to in one way or another.”
The show is written and adapted by Noemi Villela Dean & Tres Dean, with the later directing. Tony DiCenzo is the Scenic Designer and Mark L. Wray is the Lighting/Effects Designer. The Costumes are designed by Takara Adair, in collaboration with Roxanne Wright’s costume design class. Choreography by Elizabeth Daniels.
